Alberta Lacrosse Association Update for March 14

RE: COVID-19 Coronavirius

This is the update from the March 12 Membership Information release, ALA is monitoring the COVID-19 virus status and recommendations from the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta. As such, the ALA is suspending sanctioned “in person” lacrosse events immediately until April 5. This includes but not limited to practices, camps, tryouts, coaching clinics, officials’ clinics, Alberta Summer Games, Team Alberta and any previously sanctioned events such as camps and travel permits.  This does not mean we are cancelling the season.  ALA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates accordingly.  All Members are encouraged to stay up to date on developments.

“The GELC Executive  is monitoring the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 closely. We will adhere to the directives issued by the CLA  (National Governing Body), ALA (Provincial Governing Body) and Alberta Health Services. We are taking the circumstances seriously and will be acting in accordance with directions from our policy makers. The Executive Committee’s request of our member clubs is to follow the guidelines provided and use good judgement when scheduling events.”

From the ALA

As the information and actions that are being undertaken with regards to COVID-19 continue to change at a very rapid rate, the Alberta Lacrosse Association is continuing to monitor how this affects our members and participants.

As of 330pm today the Alberta Government has stated that Alberta needs to try and slow the spread of the virus and protect the health of the Albertans. With that they have stated that they wish to have all large gatherings (250 people) cancelled at this time and advising Albertans to not travel outside of the country. With this the ALA is recommending to all our member associations that any event they have planned in a facility that has a capacity of over 250 people that they should postpone these events for at least a week. The ALA is also postponing the Team Alberta tryouts that were scheduled for this weekend and further information on those will come in the coming weeks. For any member organization that is in a facility that is under 250 the ALA is recommending that these events also be postponed. The ALA wishes to ensure that we are caring for the health and safety of all our members and hope to help the province in slowing the spread of this virus.

If an event by an organization is going to occur under these situations, the ALA is letting every member know that they are able to make the decision themselves whether or not to attend these events and encourage all organizations to respect the decisions of these individuals and their decision to not attend. The ALA wants to ensure that all our organizations are considering the safety of their members and be responsible in their decisions with these events.

The ALA will continue to monitor the COVID-19 virus and its affects of our organization and what the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta recommendations are and encourage all members to also stay up to date. As we continue to get updates, we will inform all of our members.

Alberta Lacrosse Association

 From the West Edmonton Blues

Good day all.

I am sure you have seen the headlines in the news about the precautions that are being taken by numerous sports and social organizations to help contain the spread of COVID-19. Obviously, our lacrosse club is also affected by these actions. As a result, our Blues executive has made the decision that we will suspend our upcoming activities until we are able to determine what course of action to take.

As a result of this, we will not hold evaluations for our local Blues teams until we have additional information. We currently have floor times booked for the end of March and will contact with updates as to the status of these floor times as more details are worked out.

For those of you who had 12U, 14U and 16U floor times for the West A teams, the West A committee has also made the decision to postpone all floor times into the foreseeable future. Again, more communication will come out as soon as a course of action is made.

Please feel free to contact either myself (president@blueslacrosse.ca) or send an email to our general inbox (info@blueslacrosse.ca) if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Kevin Hamel
Blues President

From the Grand Prairie Thrashers President

Below is the latest comments from the Alberta Lacrosse Association regarding COVID-19 and although currently they are only recommending that we postpone group events of under 250 people we are going cancel our free drop in on Monday March 16th at the leisure center and will continue to monitor the situation and make decisions regarding our next two drop ins at some point next week.

Unless instructed other wise our intentions are to start our regular season practices in April as regular but with the following suggestions

  • Please do not show up early to practices to avoid large groups of youth waiting outside the floor or in a dressing room
  • If possible have your player in their gear before the get to the arena so they do not have to enter the dressing room to change
  • Ensure your player has a water bottle with their name clearly labeled on it and make sure it comes out of their bag after each practice and is cleaned properly .
  • Spray down your players gear (especially helmet and gloves) with an antibacterial spray after every practice
  • Remind your players to wash their hands, wash their hands, wash their hands
  • Although we are a family and love that aspect of our organization please consider not sitting in large groups in the stands and leaving some space between yourselves
  • We will do our best to limit activities that keep all of our players in close proximity on the bench or in a huddle on the floor
  • We love our lacrosse family and the safety and well being of you and your players is always at the top of our mind. We will keep you informed if anything else changes that may effect our upcoming clinics or our regular season and hope that we are able to get things back to normal soon.

All the best
Ron
